Cartier was founded in Paris, France in 1847 by Louis-Francois Cartier. Louis-Francois is responsible for creating the first mens' wristwatch. Made for an aviator friend,Santos-Dumont, who had complained of difficulty fumbling with his pocket watch during flight. Thus the "Santos" was born.
In 1874, his son, Alfred Cartier, took over the administrative responsibilities while Alfred's sons, Louis, Pierre, and Jaques, began to build the golden brand of Cartier. Pierre Cartier established the New York City branch in 1909, moving in 1917 to the current location of 653 Fifth Avenue. In 1964, Cartier left the hands of the Cartier family after the death of Pierre.
In 1988, Cartier acquired a majority holding in Piajet and Baume & Mercier. Cartier is now a huge contender in the jewelry trade. They deal in luxury goods ranging from watches and fine jewelry to leather goods and perfumes. The themes of Cartier's collections are far and wide, attracting the most modest to the most exotic and extravagant pallets.
