Jean-Claude Biver, CEO Hublot with Magic Gold

Hublot released its scratch resistant 18k gold alloy called ‘Magic Gold’ on Thursday 15th December to the world. In a recent press release, Hublot says its new ‘Magic Gold’ ‘eliminates the vulnerability of gold and its alloys.’

Normal 18-karat gold reaches a hardness of 400 on the Vickers hardness scale, however Hublots new gold reaches 1000 Vickers and is said only a diamond can scratch it.

The gold contains 750 parts pure gold as any 18-karat gold however includes ceramic which makes it the most durable gold in the world.

When traveling abroad one has two basic dilemmas; one, not knowing the language and two, not knowing what the time is based on your current time zone. The Patek Philippe 5110P addresses both those potential obstacles.

Let’s start with the first; you might not know the lands primary language. Well lucky for you if you’re wearing a Patek Philippe 5110P there is very little that you need to say, for the watch speaks any language for you. It says, yes my wearer is someone of elite class and stature, someone who has an appreciation for finer things and detail, a person who is well prepared and probably not one to be reckoned with for they can mentally adjust any situations temperature to their liking. It says the wearer has arrived! Fortunately for the possessor of the 5110P the barrier of language was destroyed almost two centuries ago when the company first began making world renowned timepieces.

Now let’s look at the issue of time; you might travel from New York to Paris and somewhere between the two cities, need to make an important call. Up above the clouds many cell phones don’t work until they readjust to the cities preferred carrier, the Patek Philippe 5110P adjust to any time zone with just a push of the button. Cell phone coverage might not work everywhere on ground and air but the 5110P will not let you down.

Patek Philippe began creating world time watches back in the 1930’s. The first of their creations distinguished itself with a globe shaped hour hand, a valuable collector’s timepiece to this day. Patek Philippe makes one of the easiest to read world timepieces in the market. Simply press the ergonomically shaped button at the 10 O’clock position, and the city ring and hour ring move counterclockwise in hourly increments, positions your preferred new city at the 12 O’clock position, and advances the hour hand. All three adjustments are made without losing a second. One of our favorite models is the 5110P with a platinum case and black alligator leather strap. The skeleton sapphire crystal case back provides the window through which the Caliber 240 HU 33 jeweled movement is displayed, a movement of pure ingenuity. The timepiece retails for roughly $38,000.00… if it were still available. The 5110P has been discontinued and is now a sought after collectors piece.

When it comes to selling a luxurious timepiece what works the best? A watch broker or taking it to a pawn shop? Many people even take their pieces to a jeweler or try selling it themselves, but what is really the best way to go?

Watch brokers typically have skin in the game, meaning they only see commission if your watch sells. This is clear motivation for watch brokers to fetch you the best price. The more your watch sells the more they typically make. Good watch brokerages have master watchmakers or master horologists thoroughly check each timepiece before any watch can be purchased. This can be a pro or con to you, based on the timepiece you are hoping to get top value for. Watch brokers are very particular in this category.

Jewelers will buy your old timepiece but only after they do a quick evaluation of the piece. It also depends on the reputation of the jeweler and if they even buy back timepieces. Most jewelers hold your watch on consignment and then take out their percentage, taxes, and additional costs, such as cleaning, etc. If a jeweler does purchase your timepiece flat out, keep in mind their objective is to buy low and sell high. Do not be surprised if they offer you 20 – 30% below the wholesale value of your watch. It is best to do your research at local jeweler, if you decide to do business with one.

Pawn shops are a little different in terms of how much money you could potentially get back from selling your timepiece. Many people choose to talk to a variety of pawn brokers before deciding whom to choose. This can become a very tedious task. Most pawn shops offer mere pennies for what a true watch is worth. Their objective is to buy for as little as possible and sell for a decent amount. Don’t let them see you’re desperate, or you might see your watch go for as little as 10% of its true value.

Would you try selling your luxurious timepiece yourself? Some people are skilled in this area and can get top dollar. You can try eBay and other online auction sites but you may end up not getting the value amount you deserve, because buyers like to purchase from reputable power sellers. Your best bet is to consult skilled online auctioneers to get their thoughts on the subject.

As you can see you have a variety of ways to sell your timepiece, but which way is the best way? You may end up with better luck if you use a genuine watch broker as they seem to really go over every intricate detail to come to an accurate and fair conclusion about the value itself.

Master watchmaker cleaning a timepiece

If you’ve purchased a luxury watch, you’ll naturally be interested in learning how to care for it to keep it in excellent condition. Here are a few tips for making sure your luxury watch stays in tip-top shape.

Wear it as often as you can. Just because your watch may have cost a substantial amount of money doesn’t mean you should save it for special occasions. Luxury watches actually work better when they’re used regularly. Sporadic use can cause the watch gears to harden, making it difficult for the watch to work effectively later.

Invest in a watch winder. If you are concerned about potentially damaging your timepiece and you do not want to wear it regularly, a watch winder might do the trick. Two reasonably-priced and well-working brand names are Orbita and Eilux. For more of the high end watch winder a Buben and Zorweg is a good choice.
Wind the watch in the morning. Not only is it best to wind the watch up everyday, but it’s also best to do it at roughly the same time everyday. Winding it in the morning is best because you will have consistent power throughout the day. This will keep the watch set to the proper time. Make sure you put it on your wrist before you wind it.
Keep your watch clean. This may seem like an obvious step to maintaining your watch, but it’s essential that you clean it properly. Use a very soft brush that won’t scratch the glass or the metal, along with warm soapy water to scrub the face gently. Wrap it in a soft cloth when you’re not using it. A Master Watchmaker or Master Horologist will clean your watch most effectively because they have the proper tools, lubes, and cleaning supplies to make your watch look as new as possible. GlobalWatchBrokers.com offers complementary cleaning.

Nicolas Hayek Sr (Feb 19,1928 - June 28, 2010) lead the way on fighting replica timepieces

Counterfeit or replica luxury watches are a thorn in the side of genuine luxury enthusiasts. Because of this watchmakers are on a journey to fight and stop counterfeiting in its tracks. It just seems to be a “thriving business” these days.

According to Marie de Pimodan of GMT Great Magazine, “If we were to stop fighting counterfeiting, it would actually swallow us up entirely. We won’t be able to eradicate it, that’s for sure, but we must still not give up, but instead continue to act wherever this plague is most apparent.” This is almost completely discouraging to watchmakers to know that their efforts are pointless, but counterfeiting must be stopped and the best watchmakers out there will not rest until these individuals are stopped.

It is so important to stop counterfeiting, not only for the industry but also for the economy. Counterfeiting results in a major loss for legitimate and legal business. Can you imagine how much money is lost per day with the selling of counterfeits? It apparently is also raising consumer and public health issues. Just stop and think what materials may be going into a fake watch, that come in contact with your skin. There’s no way of controlling the manufacture of these counterfeits, and rarely anyone to hold accountable.

Counterfeits frequently carry the logos of reputable Swiss brands, making it extremely difficult for the untrained eye to spot a fake. Because of this, watchmakers are taking steps in the design and manufacture of their watches to make it very difficult to fake. An expert can easily spot counterfeits based on such criteria and if you Google your watch’s brand and counterfeit-fighting measures, you may be able to learn what to look for to see if your watch is real or not.

Rolex is one of the most replicated watch brands. One easy way to identify a replicated Rolex is if it has a skeletonized, see-through back. Rolex has only made two skeletonized back cases – in the 1930′s – and these weren’t production watches. The chances you will see one in a store or off the street, instead of in a museum, is slim to none.

Smudging of the letters on the dial is another clear indication the watch at hand may be a replica, because reputable watch companies take the time to provide perfect craftsmanship and no detail is overlooked. Patek Philippe would never put a smeared logo stamp on their dial and claim this timepiece will last generations. It would be a sign of obviously poor craftsmanship.

Ultimately, the best way to tell is to bring your timepiece to a master horologist or watchmaker who is licensed and skilled in authenticating your brand.

What are your thoughts on the topic? Do you think it’s fair for certain watchmakers to get away with selling counterfeit time pieces? Sure, luxurious watches can become extremely expensive and counterfeits allow many individuals to own the luxurious watch of their dreams. Would you want to buy a luxurious watch that isn’t even the real brand name?

Graham watches

What makes a watch a “luxury” watch? Is it the appearance of the watch? How about the value? Realistically speaking, many individuals view watches as “luxury” based on the different watches, brands, and collections available. Many luxury watches can be passed down as heirlooms if they are made out of high quality materials. Most luxury watches are known to last through many generations, all the while functioning properly.

Many investors are parlaying their monies from poor performing stocks, due to the current economic crisis, into select watch brands and models. Many vintage timepieces, such as the Rolex ‘POW’, Patek Phillipe ‘Sky Moon Toubillon’, and A. Lange & Sohne ‘WWII Pilots Watch’, have increased greatly in value. A Rolex Paul Newman Daytona, sold for under $10,000.00 in the 1970′s, can sell for around $100,000.00 today.

As an investment, like any investment, you want to buy low and sell high. Perhaps you can achieve this by catching a seller at the right time when he just needs fast cash, or speaking with watch experts who are knowledgeable in relation to good deals. The watch specialists at GlobalWatchBrokers.com have a wealth of free knowledge and can assist, should you be in the market.

Luxury watches usually are listed at high prices due to the cost of making them. Many retailers, however, can sell luxury watches at cheaper discount prices. This allows many people to own a very nice and coveted luxury watch.

Popular investment brands of luxury watches include but are not limited to:

Rolex
Patek Phillipe
Breitling
Audemars Piguet
Piaget
Cartier
A. Lange & Sohne
Hublot
IWC Shauffenhusen
Baume and Mercier

Many other online watch dealers also include these brands of luxury watches:

Daniel Roth
Martin Braun
Harry Winston
Panerai
Vacheron Constantin
Omega
Rado and Zenith

If you would like to learn more about the history of many of these watchmakers, you can view it at GlobalWatchBrokers: Watch History.

When searching for the right luxury watch, don’t consider just the price. You want to look at the materials from which the particular watch was made – for example: gold, silver, etc. Many individuals do not mind buying a luxury watch for themselves, though they do make fantastic gifts as well. Who doesn’t want to own a luxury watch? If you need help deciding which luxury watch is for you or are considering selling a stellar timepiece, GlobalWatchBrokers has got you covered.

Rolex, Datejust, watch brokers

Since the global financial crisis began in 2008, many national currencies have taken a beating, including the United States dollar. Although the value of precious metals such as gold has skyrocketed, most savvy watch collectors are not going to the scrap metal firms; instead they understand the true value of many timepieces are in the movement. Watch sellers have noticed in many cases it is financially more advantageous to sell their watch through a broker, rather than just scraping it. Most gold firms offer little value on the gold with the seller seeing only pennies on what the true worth of their watch is. GlobalWatchBrokers.com is a company that offers transparent advice, and provides metrics regarding value of the metal and overall value of the timepiece. Before selling your watch, there are a few things that owners should keep in mind.

Check the working condition of your watch. No matter how much you paid for your timepiece, you won’t get a good price for it if it’s in bad shape. Clean it thoroughly and wind it up before you take it in to be appraised.
Get a full appraisal. There might be information such as limited addition, or historical value that might help to increase the sale.
If you’re selling to a private individual, avoid talking about the price right away. Instead, focus on the brand value, features, and materials of the watch. State your asking price firmly, but leave yourself open to reasonable offers.
